A small fishing community town on the East coast of Sri Lanka, Kalkudah (together with Passikudah) was a popular resort area as far back as the 1970s, but was inaccessible due to the war.

However, Kalkudah is now fast becoming a highly sought after destination with many new resorts lining its shores. The Kalkudah Bay is a 2km long wide stretch of beach well protected by the off shore reef which is home to schools of tropical fish and exquisite corals. The beaches still remain isolated and pristine, and the gentle waves perfect for bathing and surfing. May to September is considered as the best time to visit the weather is dry and not too hot.
